“Miss Simmons! Please wake up. Mr. Chapman is drunk and has been calling out your name. Please come out and see him!”
Lucinda stirred from her sleep. Her brows furrowed as she rolled over, dismissing the persistent knocking at her door.
Jamie continued his relentless pounding, determined to keep at it until she came out.
Irritated by the noise, she reluctantly threw off her blanket, slipped on her slippers and robe, and trudged over to answer the door.
“What does he want now?” she seethed. Her eyes was filled with disdain as she glared at Jamie.
“Miss Simmons, he didn’t mean any harm this time. He went to the bar in the afternoon and ended up drinking all day. He even drove us away. When I went back to pick him up later, I found him drunk in the snow, begging for your presence. So, I had to bring him here.”
Lucinda’s tone turned icy.
“If he gets drunk, give him some sobering pills or find a doctor. What good does it do to bring him here? I am no doctor.”
As she finished speaking, she moved to shut the door. Jamie quickly intervened, stooping down and pleading, “Just take a look at him.
